The black points system in Dubai

From pleasant to realistic, because forewarned is forearmed. Let’s talk about what might happen in case of traffic rules violations when you get a luxury car rental. Black Points is a cumulative system of penalty points that work along with monetary fines for traffic violations. These points are “put” in your personal file upon the commission of an offense (you will be notified of this by SMS within 48 hours). They can be put not only by a police officer but also based on the results of video recording the offense.

As soon as you accumulate 24 black points, RTA (Roads and Transport Authority of Dubai) suspends your driver’s license for 3 months the first time, then 6 months for the second time, and for the third time — for 1 year and you need to retake a driving course and exams at one of the driving schools in Dubai. Anyone can check their points on the Dubai Police website.

Black Points are not with you forever, you can write them off. So, the system works as follows: if you have from 8 to 24 HT, then you can take special courses at the Institute of Road Traffic for additional cost. After successfully completing the course, 8 HT will be written off from the driver's license. In addition, sometimes, on various holidays (for example, Ramadan or Eid al-Fitr), RTA arranges discounts on fines and you can knock them off even more. You can find a full list of violations, the traffic fines in Dubai, and the number of Black Points for them on the official Dubai Police website.

Speed Fines

You definitely don’t want to rent Porsche for some street racing, right? That would be a waste.

Traffic fine notifications

All traffic violations committed by the driver in a rented car are reported to the rental company. When renting a car, a certain amount of deposit is blocked on the driver's credit card, from which fines are subsequently debited. However, information about fines on the Dubai police website is not updated immediately, so the return of the deposit may take up to 30 days after the return of the car, although the exact period depends on the terms of a particular rental company.
